Daisy Rescues Drowning Infant
Posted by admin under: recognition .
Josh over at the Girl Scouts blog found a story in the Northwest Florida Daily News by Mona Moore describing a young Daisy Girl Scout who was being presented with a Lifesaving Award for rescuing a toddler in a pool at the hotel she was visiting.
When the Daisy Girl Scout saved a young toddler from drowning last month, she did not ask for or expect the hoopla that followed, but she said Monday that she appreciated it.
…
Riley, who was 5 at the time of the rescue, is one of the youngest Girl Scouts to receive the honor.
…
Riley’s rescue was another case of circumstance. She almost didn’t go swimming that day at SummerPlace Inn. The trip to the pool was a part of Riley’s first sleepover and Jaime was hesitant to let her go.
Jaime said she hoped Monday’s ceremony would be a reminder for parents to teach kids pool safety and how to swim. Riley learned to swim when she was 2; her sister, Kassidy, at nine months.
“If they’re old enough to drown, they’re old enough to swim,” Jaime said.
The baby Riley saved would have benefited from the lessons. “The first thing they teach you is how to get to the side of the pool,” she added.
Words like “exceptional,” “leader” and “hero” bounced around the room during Riley’s ceremony. Officials managed to keep Riley’s attention as she sat next to her family, feet swinging 6 inches from the floor. That is, until Barker presented her with the key to Destin. After that, Riley’s gaze rarely left the gold award.
Riley handled the praise with aplomb, accepting one award after another with a smile and a handshake. With a bashful smile, she carried the awards to her mother.
Gaetz invited the state’s “smallest, cutest and newest hero” to sit with him at the edge of the stage and she relinquished her key to her mom.
Wow! My five year old was still cleaning green beans out of his hair while this young lady is saving a life. How great is it that we can recognize her accomplishment through one of the best organizations in the country? She might decide to make saving lives her own lifetime goal. Talk about your positive reinforcement!
