For the last year, Corey Chabot has collected supplies, raised thousands of dollars, bartered for water bottles — all to create emergency kits for every student at his high school. “I had the idea to do this when I saw a Texas school on the Discovery Channel that was unprepared for a major disaster,” said Corey, a Boy Scout. “I wondered what my school had in place, and that’s when it all started.” Corey learned the school safety committee had enough emergency supplies for 2,000 students, — 1,000 students short in a potential disaster. “The first two months, I was like, ‘Wow, this will be a lot of work,’ but I had to finish it,” he said. “Very few teachers have these in their classrooms. They will be a great resource in case of a lock down, fire or earthquake.” Corey packed the items — bandages, medical gloves, glow sticks and first aid books — in paint cans donated by a local company.

In Boy Scouts, there are no merit badges for ramp building. But if there were, Jordan Thompson, 17, a lifelong resident of Marseilles, certainly would have earned one. As it is, his project to construct a ramp in his hometown will help qualify him for Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle. There were many little donations, and also some larger ones, such as the ones from Illinois Valley Cellular and Schott’s Pharmacy. The Methodist church where the Thompsons are members took up a collection for the ramp. The biggest donation was from the city itself, which contributed $600 and waived the fee for a building permit.

The Walkersville senior had power-washed, primed and repainted the Woodsboro Regional Park’s worn concession stand, and that spurred him to think bigger. He coordinated with town commissioner Joel Rensberger, organized paint and supply donations and called on his Woodsboro Troop 1011 scouting buddies. Davies then led an effort overhauling the park’s baseball dugouts, re-painting the park’s pump house and returning the overgrown batting cages into usable condition.

Braden Welburn made a difference that has him today being praised by the Utah National Guard. His project resulted in the largest donation ever to Operation Golden Spike, an organization dedicated to helping the needy in Afghanistan. Welburn shipped 32 boxes with hundreds of coats, mittens, hats and blankets to Afghanistan. He began gathering the items after hearing from family friend 1st Lt. Will Biesinger. Welburn took on Biesinger’s request for help as his Eagle Scout project. Over a five-month period, he collected coats never claimed from lost and founds, and new donations Welburn said, “It was a long process. We washed them, sorted them, [and] packed them.”
