Ronnie Mumm, the son of Ron and Lora Mumm of Olathe, is the newest Eagle Scout in Troop 475. He joined Troop 475 of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just three years ago, after being a Cub Scout since he was seven years old. It was the dream of Ronnie and his twin brother, Kacey, to complete their Eagle Scout projects and receive the rank before they reached the age of 14 years. After the loss of his brother last year, Ronnie knew that he had to reach the goal for both of them. After meeting with the troop committee, it was agreed that Ronnie could have the honor of designing and building a bench to stand in the Olathe Cemetery in memory of his brother, Kacey. Ronnie says the project was important to him, so he could honor his brother. The maintenance-free bench was built and placed with the help of his father, donations from the community and cooperation from the troop.

For his leadership project for the Eagle Scout badge, the major requirement component in the endeavor, Tyler organized an effort to recognize exceptional trees in the Lahaina Historic District. Tucker Lutter was quite particular when it came to selecting his service project as required to earn the Eagle Scout Award. Tucker, a member of Scout Troop 100 of Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, came up with the idea of having volunteers make baby blankets, which will be distributed to new mothers through Birthright. The homemade portion of the equation was very important because that way people could pray for the mothers and babies as they did their handiwork. And, with homemade blankets, he said the young mothers would know that someone cared very much about them. In the end, over 200 blankets will be given to Birthright. The blankets are made up of various sizes, colors and styles from fleece to quilts and flannel to those that were crocheted and knit. Attached to each blanket will be a rosary and a card that states, “This blanket was handmade and prayed over especially for you and your baby”.

Only one in every hundred Boy Scouts achieves the rank of Eagle, but for a group of Medfield friends, a strong bond with one another and even stronger ideals ensured that all seven of them garnered this honor. The journey started in 5th grade. It was at this age that Sam Dickinson, Colman Tishler, Luke Sullivan, Nick Pericles, Patrick McFetridge, Brandan Quinn, Thomas Lueders, Rob Piersiak and Hunter Fellman Green decided to join the Boy Scouts, beginning a long path that would find them aiding the community along the way. When at last the time arrived for the boys to go after their Eagle Scout honors this past year, they all came up with ways to better the Medfield community. Tishler laid erosion bars onto the slope in the Noon Hill Reservation, Sullivan constructed a walking trail behind the Center at Medfield, Pericles created a small park at the Rte. 27 and South St. extension land, McFetridge built shelves for and ran a food drive for Haley House, and Quinn constructed a horseshoe pit at the Center at Medfield. Lueders, meanwhile, cleared land near Danielson Pond and refurbished the boat launch, Piersiak worked with Town Historian Richard DeSorgher to update photos of historic homes in town, Dickinson removed metal cages from a cat room at the Medfield Animal Shelter and installed safer wooden climbing structures, and Fellman Green cleaned up the Medfield section of the Charles River.

When it came to generating an idea for an Eagle Scout project, Richard Iseppi could have gone the traditional route that many of his fellow aspiring Eagle Scouts have taken, opting to build trails at local schools. But the 16-year-old Hartland High School sophomore instead chose a cause close to his heart: the Humane Society of Livingston County. So, in just a few short hours on a Saturday last month, Richard Iseppi and roughly a dozen friends and fellow Boy Scouts helped collect multiple carloads full of food and $750.

Congratulations to Nathan T. on becoming an Eagle Scout last Monday night. Over the years I watched Nathan work hard toward earning 31 Merit Badges and scouting’s highest rank. Three memorable experiences I’ll remember the most that I shared with Nathan are doing our OA Ordeal and Brotherhood together, along with our high adventure trip to Packard High Adventure Base in Colorado. I wish to express my gratitude to the residents of the town of West Rutland in their support for the West Rutland Food Shelf and my Boy Scout Eagle project. I would also like to thank LaValley’s Building Supply for the donation of materials for the new shelving. With approximately 2,000 pounds of food collected during our food drive on Jan. 31, it is absolutely humbling to see the generosity the people of this town show for those in need. What a wonderful community we live in.
