On October 3 an exceptional Eagle Court of Honor was held for six friends who said they would wait for each other to get their Eagle Awards and they did just that.

Jeff Kolb, 17, earned his Eagle Scout Award on November 11, 2006. With the help of others, he built a fence in the Los Jilgueros Preserve. The fence will help keep domestic animals out while keeping wild animals in and preserving the natural habitat.

Jacob Ricks, 17, became an Eagle in May of this year. For his project, he built a 20-foot raised section of a boardwalk in the Bonsall Preserve. The section that he chose to build was through the Fallbrook Land Conservancy.

Zachery Neilson, 18, completed his project on June 24. He designed and built an interlocking stone pathway for the Fallbrook Land Conservancy at the Palomares House.

Daniel Arnold, 16, also received his Eagle ranking on June 24. With the help of fellow scouts and their fathers, he covered 500 square feet with brick pavers around planter boxes at Fallbrook Street Elementary School. The students are now planting with gray and red pavers around them instead of mud and dirt.

Russell Barrett, 17, passed his board of review for his Eagle Scout on September 16. For his project he chose to complete six submersible swim benches to be used for swim lessons in the Community Swimming Pool at Fallbrook High School.

Chris Rumsey, 17, passed his board of review on September 23. For his Eagle Project he put in a garden at Bonsall Elementary School. After he developed a plan, 22 scouts helped him build the garden, which was designed to help with the second grade science curriculum.

Today you are going to learn about two young men from Troop 127, sponsored by Andrew Methodist Church, who both earned their Eagle rank but by doing very different projects.

Tyler Fritz didn’t move a mountain for his Eagle project, just a food bank – The Loaves and Fishes in Perry.

Tyler, who is in 10th grade at Perry High and is the son of Dan and Lori Fritz, had some help – which is actually part of running a Eagle project, by showing leadership. They started at the new location, next to the Christ Lutheran Church on Carroll Street in Perry, working hard to clean it up. Then they went over to the old location, where they packed all the food from several rooms and the shelving units. They hauled that to the new location and unloaded and put away all the food.

For Sean Fearing’s Eagle project, he built a replica of a “tiger cage” like those used by the North Vietnamese to hold prisoners of war. He built the project for the National POW Museum housed at Andersonville. While on a Scout camping trip to Andersonville, Sean discovered that the old “tiger cage” on display at the museum was deteriorating. He contacted museum officials and got permission to build a replacement. During the service project, Sean directed the other scouts in first tearing down the old “tiger cage” and then constructing the new one. The new “tiger cage” measured approximately 5 feet by 9 feet. Bamboo, rope and thatched palm leaf panels for the roof were used to build the cage, replicating the material used in the above-ground “tiger cages” in Vietnam. Square lashings were used to join the bamboo to form the cage frame. The new “tiger cage” is now on display in the museum. According to troop historian Will Paris’ write-up on the project, it was a service to the public since the POW museum is for public use and education.

Ryan Wyatt has had a busy and exciting year. The soon-to-be 14-year-old moved from Severn to Wellington, New Zealand, where his father serves as a U.S. diplomat, the day after he received his Eagle Scout rank. His service project was inspired by his camping experiences at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center in Millersville while he was in elementary school. Ryan learned there was a need to stop the growth of a non-native plant and prevent erosion at the park. He met with staff to plan the project and contacted friends to help. Lewis Tree Service donated $500 worth of shrubs. The cost of the project was approximately $900 and with the help of 40 people the job was completed. The volunteers worked in the rain to get the project done.

Three young men, members of Gloucester’s Boy Scout Troop 60, have each completed a project that in some way benefits younger children. Each will be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scout’s highest honor, in November. Kyle Clayton, David Copeland and Matt Conley will join the fewer than 5 percent of Boy Scouts, who achieve the Eagle rank.

Conley, 18, a senior at Gloucester High School, created a safe haven for local children by clearing up a playground area at Wellspring House, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic abuse and their children in Gloucester. The non-profit agency is dedicated to helping families move out of poverty and get back on their feet.

David Copeland, 17, a Marblehead High School junior, helped out at the Shore Lea Nature Center in Marblehead by cleaning up the surrounding area, installing a flag pole, creating log benches and painting a room inside the center. The center is used by the Audubon Society, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from around the North Shore, and other groups to learn about nature and history.

Clayton’s project consisted of washing and fixing walls and painting the two-story Youth Ministry Recreation Room at the Cavalry Christian Church in Lynnfield. “The storage room was so messy you couldn’t even walk in it. So I thought ‘I should clean that out, too,” said the 18-year-old. Besides clearing the storage room, the recent Gloucester High School graduate organized the room.

Delos (Del) Rockwell III received his Eagle Scout rank at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Lowell United Methodist Church. His Eagle project was to create an area at the Wittenbach/Wege nature center where local youth groups and classes of children can get close to one of the creeks on property to do experiments, but still not do damage to the surrounding ecology. Del planned the project and managed a team of more than a dozen people that transformed a small section of the nature center into an area where experiments can be run while still maintaining the wilderness look.

Kyle Layton graduated with over a 4.0 average, played varsity soccer and was active in high school. As an Eagle Scout candidate he looked for a project that would benefit the entire community, not just a small portion of it. The Memorial Garden idea came after Kyle heard about the Virginia Tech shootings. “I had the idea of doing something but Mr. (Joseph) Spiccia helped me fine tune it,” Kyle Layton said about the school principal. He had to set up a meeting with Spiccia to pitch the idea of a memorial and gain approval from the school board. From there, it went to the school board. Once the project was approved, Layton had to set up the budget, find a landscape architect to draw up plans and line up donations to get the memorial garden built. Wyatt’s Greenhouse of Mentor donated the flowers. “JTO (Inc. of Mentor) was great, I called about the base and foundation for the walk. They said, ‘whatever you need’,” Layton said. “They dug it out with a backhoe,” he said. Prior to JTO’s appearance, Layton and his crew were digging out the walkway by hand in the cold fall weather. Layton had thought of planting a tree adjacent to the garden, but the suggestion of a metal sculpture was mentioned, and he liked the idea. “Lakeland did the sculpture and a lot of the students from Mentor’s Tech Prep program had a part in the sculpture’s design, cut out and installation,” Layton said. The metal tree sculpture is the backdrop for the garden. Layton earned his Eagle Scout award in February, and the brick path, mulching and flowers were completed in the spring.
