Scout Troop 477, chartered to Kingswood United Methodist Church, is pleased to announce that Michael David Fessenden, son of Donna and David Fessenden of Dunwoody, has earned his Eagle Scout Rank. Michael’s Eagle Scout Project consisted of trail improvements on two nature trails at Chamblee First United Methodist Church. These improvements included mulching each trail, cleaning and weather sealing existing structures, repairing bridges, building and installing three new benches, and hanging bird houses provided by church members.

Kyle Nelson, the son of Scott and Sandy Nelson of Atlantic, was awarded his Eagle Scout rank at a ceremony at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Oct. 19, 2008. Nelson’s Eagle project took place at Matthew’s House Daycare and Pre-school, which he had attended years earlier. His project involved cleaning the playground area of weeds, removing the old pea gravel, re-positioning railroad ties, placing down a new ground mat, and adding 13 tons of new pea gravel, which had to be carried in buckets by hand. The sand box lid was also rebuilt and painted, and new sand was added.

For his Eagle service project, he refurbished the baseball diamond at the Amesbury Park. He, along with other scouts and friends, worked more than 215 hours replacing benches, erecting protective fencing, reseeding grassy areas, resurfacing a gravel road and painting. This project was special to Watson, as he has played baseball on the field for many years and one of his final games was shortly after he completed the project.

Three boy scouts from Kingston have completed their trail to Eagle Scout. Colby Alves, Tim and Dan Benza worked together on three phases of renovating the N-9 bunker at WSP. Each has now attained the BSA rank of Eagle. The project began more than two years ago. At an early meeting of the Friends of Wompatuck, the bunker project was on a wish list for restoration. The exact history of the bunker was unknown to FOW. It was also different than the other bunkers, most of which have been removed from the park.

The first phase was the landscaping. Tim led a team of scouts and volunteers clearing the underbrush, removing Naval asphalt, laying out the garden area and beginning the ramp needed to access the loading dock. Tim’s phase stalled for a while due to broken promises from numerous con tractors.

While the site work was underway, Colby began to research the history. He joined forces with FOW Historian Jim Rose. The result of Jim and Colby’s research was printed on a sign now displayed at the site. For a full text of the sign, visit friendsofwompatuck.org or visit the bunker.

Dan’s part spanned the two years. At the start, Dan recruited helpers to remove debris and trash from the site. They then sanded, primed and painted the vault doors. He maintained the military markings on the interior of the doors. Dan also patched the concrete walls and applied paint to hide graffiti. After overcoming the contractor problems, Tim was able to continue in the summer of 2007. With help from donations, Tim built the concrete ramp and installed handrails. As the site work was completed, Colby installed the sign and planted the memorial garden in the fall of 2007. The garden, complete with two stone benches, is at the end of an unpaved path a few hundred feet off Union Street. The benches overlook the bunker, ramp, and sign, and some perennial flowers and shrubs. The boys have now completed each of the three phases.

Fewer than 5 percent of boys who join the Boy Scouts nationwide stick around long enough to earn the rank of Eagle Scout — but eight members of the same troop did it simultaneously in Duluth. For more than a decade, the scouts — Sean Peterson, Ryan Stupca, Patrick Fitzsimmons, Max Strand, Ross Priolo, Tim Kokotovich, Taylor Hanson and Nickolas Hedtke — have spent Monday evenings tucked away in a corner of the basement at Hillside United Methodist Church. Over the years, they’ve learned everything from how to tie knots to how to survive in the wilderness. Peterson, who also is a Denfeld senior, decided to organize a drive for food and personal hygiene products for residents of the New San Marco Apartments. The project took hours to accomplish, but it was worth it, he said.

Five Boy Scouts in Troop 692 in Blue Springs became Eagle Scouts in a court of honor ceremony Oct. 26 at Timothy Lutheran Church. The new Eagles are Samuel Taylor Anderson, Ethan S. Clark, Ryan C. Easley, Jake Hickman and Neal Thomas.

For his Eagle project, Sam led a team of 25 adults and Scouts in the beautification of the courtyard at Lucy Franklin Elementary School. Weeds were pulled, dirt and mulch placed, two trees planted and two picnic tables were built.

Ethan also is a warrior in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, he organized a group of Boy Scouts to do volunteer work at his church, Duncan Road Baptist Church. The Scouts did landscaping in the children’s play area, including moving dirt into a low area near the church’s foundation, refreshed mulch near the building, planted sod/grass seed and flowers, and built a picnic table.

Ryan’s Eagle project involved directing a group of 9 scouts and 5 adults in the planting 150 trees in different areas of the Rotary Camp in Lee’s Summit.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Jake organized and led a food drive that canvassed 300 homes in Blue Springs and delivered more than 60 bags of grocery and personal items to the Blue Springs Community Services League Food Pantry.

Eagle Scout Nick Roberts’s community project was to paint and fix up the Battered Women’s Shelter in Yanceyville. Nick spent more than 25 hours planning his project and gathering materials donated by Ace Hardware. Other costs were covered by a grant to the shelter. Twenty-five volunteers devoted approximately 300 hours of labor to complete the project. Nick has joined the U.S. Army and will depart February 2009.

Eagle Scout Brandon Thompson’s community project was to remove brush and other debris from around the Battered Women’s Shelter. He states that the planning of the project did not take much time but ten volunteers devoted 20 hours of labor. No expenses were incurred.

Eagle Scout Jordan Massey’s community project was gathering personal hygiene items and assembling 50 Humanitarian Aid Kits. Each kit contained soap, towels, combs, shampoo, four tooth brushes and toothpaste, all sealed in a waterproof bag. Such kits are distributed all over the world wherever disasters strikes. Through Jordan’s efforts, no cost was incurred. All items were donated and numerous volunteers helped assemble the 50 kits.

Eagle Scout Ethan Poe’s community project was a bit unusual but it fits in perfectly with his ambition of becoming an engineer, either electrical, mechanical or nano. Ethan spent 33 hours of planning and designing a sixteen-foot tower as an observation post for the leader/instructor of the East Alamance Marching Band. Said tower was built on a trailer for the necessary mobility. Through Ethan’s efforts all materials were donated by supporters and seven volunteers worked 65 hours to complete the project.

Eagle Scout James Tate and his cadre of workers built a one-mile walking trail at Farmer’s Lake as his community project. This project took 2 hours of planning and was funded $80 by the Farmer’s Lake budget. James and his ten volunteers spent 33 hours laying out the trail, cutting grass and brush, leveling the terrain and posting signs.
