Two Boy Scouts from Doha have been awarded the top rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. Scott Merkley and Milos Markicevic belong to Troop 970 in Doha and were recognised at a ceremony on November 29.
Milos, a senior at The American School of Doha, chose to help renovate and decorate the Paediatric Clinic including the children’s waiting room, at the American Hospital in Doha. He organised the painting of the drab walls and provided beautiful wall hangings and a children’s table, making it a more enjoyable experience for children waiting to see the doctor.
Scott, a ninth grade student at Middle East International School, organised the collection of 300 pairs of glasses and 260 hygiene kits for an Ethiopian village for his Eagle Project. Subsequently, he travelled to the village of Kersa Illala in June 2008 to deliver the supplies and did a week of volunteer service in a health clinic.

With his father and grandfather achieving Eagle Scout status, it seemed only natural that Coston Rowe should try to join them in achieving the award. Now, Rowe will be joining his father and grandfather in earning Eagle Scout. His project was to renovate two tennis courts in the Rainbow Estates neighborhood. “The city agreed to supply the materials for the renovations, and I provided the labor,” Rowe said. “It took over a year to complete this project. I am thankful for the many Scouts, friends and family members who were gracious enough to help; I couldn’t have done it without them.” The City Council honored Rowe with a proclamation in September for his efforts.

For Loyola College Prep freshman Carter Boyd, participating in baseball, tennis and football was not enough. Instead, Boyd wanted to be a good sport and launched his organization BAGS three years ago. Through BAGS, Boyd distributes sports equipment to children in need throughout the community. His latest distribution on Nov. 11 at the Carver YMCA featured former LSU Coach Dale Brown, who helped him give away the equipment and spoke to students at the facility. This Boy Scout of Troop No. 18 has earned an Eagle Scout award and has spoken to local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. Yet, in the end, Boyd hopes for a deed even greater than giving sporting equipment to children in need. “Hopefully it will inspire some of them to help someone else when they’re older.”

Stephen Langston was eager to show off his pride and joy. “These are winterberry and bayberry,” he said, patting two small shrubs. He was describing plants in the rain garden he designed, dug and planted in the Round Bay area of Severna Park, adjacent to the Baltimore Annapolis Trail, as part of earning his Eagle Scout Award. The Eagle Scout Award almost got away from the Old Mill High School senior, who is a Scout in Troop 339 and a member of Venture Crew 339. Two previous attempts to create a rain garden within his own neighborhood were stymied by balky neighbors or community association bylaws. He received a $1,000 grant from Unity Gardens to purchase plants native to the Chesapeake Bay region. In planning the garden, Stephen also sought the advice of Keith Underwood, of Underwood & Associates, a landscape architecture and environmental design firm in Annapolis, and B&A Trail Park Ranger Kevin Keller.

When Steven Agretelis was a youngster, he joined the Boy Scouts and set a goal — someday, he decided, he would be an Eagle Scout. Agretelis’ ambition will be realized on Nov. 30 when he will earn the Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank a Scout can receive. Agretelis built dugouts on the softball diamond at Memorial Field in Bolton. The planning began last winter and culminated in opening day last spring, when the softball league publicly thanked him. The actual structure was completed early last spring, but the behind-the-scenes work began months before. Agretelis spent much time writing proposals and securing donations and permits. He did some preassembly over the winter as well.
