Washington
The Longview City Council on Thursday thanked Boy Scout Adam Teig for refurbishing 21 city-owned benches in downtown Longview as his Eagle Scout community service project. Teig, who turned 18 on Sept. 5, spent the summer repairing, sanding and painting the benches on Commerce Avenue. A member of Boy Scout troop No. 327, Teig spent 500 hours on the project, according to Hank Sowerwine, Longview’s downtown business builder.

Maryland
Troop 62, Chewsville, honored Michael Anthony Baer and David William Robinette with the highest award in Scouting - the Eagle Scout on Aug. 16 at Chewsville Community Center.

Michael’s Eagle project was to organize other scouts to assist in the painting of two rooms at the Catholic Charities building in Hagers-town. The project consisted of cleaning the rooms, stripping off paint, sanding and repainting all of the woodwork in the rooms.

David’s Eagle project was to organize and refurbish an office at the Catholic Charities building in Hagerstown. This project involved cleaning, stripping off old paint, sanding the woodwork and then repainting the room. This project was completed with the assistance of family, friends and Boy Scout troop members.

Jefferson Freeman and Jeffrey McHale, both from Clarksville, were honored in a ceremony Aug. 10 — the Eagle Court of Honor — where they were awarded their Eagle rank, becoming the first two Eagle Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 793. For his Eagle project, Freeman planned and supervised the building of a pergola over the altar in the outdoor sanctuary area at Glenelg United Methodist Church. McHale’s Eagle project was carried out at the St. Louis Parish Cemetery Chapel. He supervised the sanding and staining of the floor and stairs of the upper sacristy with the help of more than 20 scouts, adults and friends. He also prepared the rest of the chapel for its dedication which took place in November 2007.

Colorado
Jacob Clark is using his Eagle Scout service project to help Colorado youth who have parents deployed abroad with the military. Working with Operation Military Kids, 13-year-old Jacob’s goal is to fill 100 backpacks with supplies including disposable cameras, journals, stamps and stickers – anything that will help the kids creatively keep in touch with the parent who is away.

Michigan
Rex Borgman has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and will be recognized at a court of honor ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at Williamston United Methodist Church, 211 S. Putnam St. Borgman’s Eagle project entailed supervising repairs at Cabot Cemetery in Wheatfield Township, including erecting unearthed headstones, repairing broken headstones, moving footstones to facilitate mowing and maintenance. He also supervised removal of invasive plants at the cemetery.

Kendall Law received the Eagle Scout award, Scouting’s highest achievement, from the Boy Scouts of America, in August. A member of Dansville Boy Scout Troop 21, chartered to Golden K Kiwanis of Mason, Law completed his service project of installing landscaping at the Millville United Methodist Church.

New Jersey
Douglas Caruana of Ringoes earned his Eagle Scout badge on July 14 for creating a sitting area for patients, visitors, volunteers and employees at Hunterdon Medical Center. The project took 238 hours to complete, and he began the planning two years ago. Caruana solicited donations from Rutgers Landscaping which included mulch, pavers, plants, trees, gravel and the use of some equipment. Hunterdon Medical Center purchased two benches for the area. Friends and fellow scouts helped Caruana with the project.

Boy Scout Troop 81 Committee Member Bob Montgomery serves as the Master of Ceremonies for the Court of Honor. The court is held to recognize a scout’s journey to the highest ranking in scouting-Eagle Scout. On Sunday, Montgomery stood at the podium like he has done for all the eagles that have passed through Boy Scout Troop 81 but not as the Master of Ceremonies. Instead, Montgomery watched as his son, Matt took the pledge of Eagle Scout at the Aquin Center at the Church of the Holy Family. Matt Montgomery is a junior at Washington Township High School.

Pennsylvania
Cody Johns, 15, grandson of Ron and Bonny Johns of Johnstown, has received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank in Boy Scouting. For his Eagle project, Johns helped to renovate Mom’s House by cleaning and painting several rooms.

Channing F. Mack, 18, son of Dennis and Brenda Mack of Homer City, has received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

Louisiana
Members of three different area Boy Scout troops are featured today for having earned the rank of Eagle, Boy Scouting’s highest rank.

Chase Ryan Browning
Eagle project: Constructed and formed a concrete base for a statue, Guardian Angel with Child, in the courtyard of St. Alphonsus School in honor of Sister Esther Hulin who retired after 50-plus years of service. He also added shrubs and flowers to the landscaping in the courtyard.

Robert Matthew Clary
Eagle project: Bone marrow donor screening drive provided an opportunity for people in the greater Baton Rouge area to be added to the National Bone Marrow donor list of potential bone marrow donors.

Eagle project: Planned, organized and carried out the clearing of an overgrown utility easement next to University Methodist’s parking lot. The overgrown area was an eyesore and prevented use of adjacent parking spaces. Once cleared of vines, brush, dead trees and overhanging limbs, the area was weeded and cleaned. Remaining bushes and trees were pruned and mulched.

Logan Leggett
Eagle Project: Built benches for trails at the United Methodist Conference Center in Woodworth. He directed 15 volunteers, detailed planning, bought all necessary supplies, figured out the financing and wrote a report.

Nicholas LeSage
Eagle Project: Built three tables with shelves and storage areas for the St. Alphonsus School art room to replace old folding tables.

New York
Robert Zayas officially earned his wings as he received his Eagle Scout neckerchief in a ceremony at the Lions Club pavilion, and the 15-year-old thanked his parents for supporting him on his journey to achieving the highest Boy Scout class. With the help of his peers, Zayas renovated the Pine Plains Lions Club pavilion last fall as his community service project.

Josh Finkelstein, 15, is about to join the ranks of some of the most famous men in history, including President Gerald R. Ford, Neil Armstrong and Steven Spielberg. He is about to become an Eagle Scout. Josh and the rest of Boy Scout Troop 156 are affiliated with Buffalo’s Jewish community and meet on Sundays at the Jewish Community Center. It was here that Josh and his father and Scoutmaster, Dr. Mark S. Finkelstein, proposed the idea of a cemetery cleanup for his Eagle Scout project. Finkelstein is in charge of the cemetery for Temple Sinai, where they are members of the congregation. They decided to focus on Beth Jacob Cemetery, a historic cemetery in Buffalo’s Jewish community, located on Lansdale Street on the East Side.

Missouri
Two Trenton Boy Scouts received their Eagle Scout Awards during ceremonies on Sunday at the Tindall Christian Church. Zach Scott is a member of Boy Scout Troop 97 and Derek Ricketts is a member of Boy Scout Troop 99, both of Trenton. Scott is the son of Melissa and Steve Sims of Trenton and Jeff and Cathy Scott of Chula. Ricketts’ parents are Leona and Kirby Ricketts of Trenton.

For his Eagle project, Zach painted walls and ceilings, replaced doors, light fixtures and paneling of the restroom and back hallway area of the Tindall Christian Church and also relocated the church sign. For his Eagle project, Derek removed carpet from the basement of the Tindall Christian Church and tiled the kitchen area of the basement with the help of his parents, his brother-in-law, Staff Sgt. Sam Lake, and church member Travis Sawyer.

Iowa
Two Crestwood High School students completed Eagle Scout projects this summer alongside the Prairie Farmer trail and the Prairie Springs Recreational Trail. Jacob Jenson’s trail shelter and Josh Stika’s two information kiosks both complement the trails that run through Howard County. Jacob’s project, a shelter featuring cedar shingles and cedar siding, is located about two miles south of Cresco, just west of Protivin Rd., alongside the Prairie Springs Recreational Trail. Josh, 16, completed his Eagle Scout project along the Prairie Farmer Trail in Cresco. Josh built two kiosks that sit alongside the trail, providing information, such as maps, to bicyclists and walkers passing by.

Ohio
When you think of how a typical 17-year-old boy might spend his afternoon, your thoughts probably consist of something like playing video games, bickering with siblings or plotting an explanation of how his dog just ate his homework. Meet the exception, James Larson. The not-so-typical high school student spent his summer constructing two boardwalk bridges over wet and muddy drainage areas of Hueston Woods State Park, earning himself the coveted ranking of Eagle Scout.

California
Daniel Ramos, 16, wanted to quit the Boy Scouts of America after only a couple of meetings.
It wasn’t an option. The never-say-die attitude helped Ramos as he led fellow scouts from his troop, family members and friends to complete his Eagle Scout project. The group spent four Sundays last December building dugout covers and refurbishing the bleachers at Birney Elementary School.
