Seventeen young men obtained the rank of Eagle Scout Sunday morning at Gainesville First United Methodist Church.

The scouts received their Eagle Scout ranking in a special ceremony during the Sunday school hour, then were recognized along with the rest of Boy Scout Troop 16 at the 10:55 a.m. worship service.

In order to receive the rank of Eagle, scouts must complete a leadership service project that requires a minimum of 120 man hours. They must also obtain a certain number of merit badges.
[NOTE: There is no minimum number of hours for an Eagle project. This is a common misconception.]

Two weeks ago while House Speaker Mike Busch, D-Annapolis, looked on, six more of the Scoutmaster’s Boy Scouts were recognized in an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony held at the Ulmstead Barn.

The new Eagle Scouts are:

Shawn Hagerty, 17, a Broadneck High senior, designed and built new benches for the outdoor learning area of an Arnold school.

Matt Kelly, 18, a member of Broadneck High Class of 2008 and a freshman at Coastal Carolina College, helped create a new look for a local sporting club with new benches and refurbished billboards.

Sean Kelly, 16, a Broadneck High junior, noticed that the nature area of an Annapolis park needed better signage, so he created and installed it for his project.

Jimmy Llewellyn, 16, a Broadneck High senior, improved the look of an Annapolis sporting club with new benches and seating.

Matt Unglesbee, 17, Broadneck High Class of 2008 and a communications major at AACC, discovered the canoe rack at a Cape St. Claire beach was overloaded. He estimates it took 200 volunteer hours to design, source and construct a handsome new one. Not surprisingly, it too is now filled with canoes.

Angelo had a similar approach and he added two picnic tables to the Skylur J. Spagone Memorial Skate Park. The work for the project included digging holes and pouring cement into tubes, and setting eye bolts to secure the bench and tables in the area at the front or street end of the park.
