Singer Saves Horn
Posted by admin under: recognition .
Paula and Marc at the Fresno Bee relate how a Boy Scout came to the aid of a kayaker on vacation in Mexico.
The Boy Scout motto is “Be prepared,” and when Boy Scout Ben Singer, 14, of Fresno saw Kemp Horn struggling in the surf off Ixtapa, Mexico, he was ready.
“I’ve been preparing for this my entire Scout career,” said Ben, who rescued Horn, 62, after Horn flipped out of his kayak hundreds of yards from the beach.
“I knew that was my moment,” Ben said.
For his heroic actions, Ben was honored Tuesday night with the National Heroism Award, one of the Boy Scouts of America’s top five awards. Ben, a member of Troop 223, holds the rank of Life Scout, one step below Eagle Scout.
Horn says Ben likely saved his life.
Well done, Ben. Something tells me he’s likely to pass his Eagle Board at the appropriate time with flying colors.
