Beginning band students at Glen View School recently got a boost to their music program with the donation of new percussion instruments. Keri Downs of Girl Scout Troop 8011 in Rancho Peñasquitos arranged the gift as part of her effort to earn the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

The Edith Wheeler Memorial Library in Monroe offered a Teen Twilight program during November to celebrate the much-awaited movie opening, but it wasn’t run in the usual fashion. Sara Hutton, a Masuk High School senior, organized and presented the entire event. Hutton is working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award. She offered her services to the library to fulfill the rigorous Project Requirement, which must represent 60 hours of work and encompass “organizational, leadership and networking skills.”

Kathleen Cohen, 18, daughter of Joseph Cohen and Betty Benjevin of Holden; Maia Valcarce, 18, daughter of Ed and Karen Valcarce of Sterling; and Renee Williams, 19, daughter of Tom and Jenni Howe of Holden, and Donald Williams of Orange, were each awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award

When Tannis Boyajian learned about a casting call for swordsmen for the recently premiered movie “Bridge Crusader” — partially shot on the Keyes conservation property — it seemed second nature to her. Tannis might be good at it, for she earned her Girl Scout Gold Award — the equivalent of the Boy Scout’s Eagle status — in Pepperell’s Troop 840, teaching a medieval children’s program for kindergarten through grade two.

Alex Shingleton admits she got the title of Garden City Junior Miss by default – she was the only local applicant.Shingleton has the community service component covered. She earned her Girl Scout Gold Award after organizing improvements to the playground at the Wayne County Family Shelter in Wayne.
