Arizona
Jessica Rydberg, the 2007 3A state cross country champion, not only holds the school record for the 1600 and 3200 meters in track, but she is No. 1 in her class academically. She is also a recipient of The Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout may earn. Her project was to facilitate and coordinate construction of a solar greenhouse for use by Blue Ridge special education students.

Colorado
Lakewood High School senior Caitlin Corenblith has been appointed to the Colorado Youth Advisory Council by Senator Betty Boyd. She is also an Ambassador-Level Girl Scout, and this past summer saw Caitlin traveling around Great Britain for six weeks, promoting her Girl Scout Gold Award Project, which established International Club at LHS. International Club is a web-based video conference between LHS and Portsmouth (England) High School, which allows the students in the two schools to meet regularly to discuss current events and other topics important to today’s teens. Eventually, LHS and PHS will add more international schools to International Club, creating a global link of teens who share common concerns, and facilitating friendship between countries.

Looking for a challenge, Lauren Reinmann couldn’t have tackled a more daunting one than health care for the uninsured. But the 17-year-old senior at Wallingford’s Sheehan High School is already making some progress in her hometown as she starts to match those in need with providers willing to donate their services for free. Reinmann, who undertook the project to earn the Gold Award, which is the top accomplishment for a Girl Scout, described her project at the health forum held Wednesday by U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd at Goodwin College. Working through Master’s Manna, a food pantry and soup kitchen in Wallingford, Reinmann found the clients needed dental work, prescriptions and eye care and, so far, she has found two optometrists and a dentist that have provided care for free.

Senior Girl Scout Troop 1381, established in 1996, recently received Girl Scouting’s highest accolade, the Gold Award, for creating a library at Clearwater’s Grace House, a shelter for homeless families with children. The troop is made up of Katie Marshall, Devon Holder and Kanyon McLean, who all attend the University of Florida; Kelsey Smith, a student at the University of Central Florida; Devon Blackburn, who attends St. Petersburg College; and Amanda Sieradzki, a senior at Seminole High with future college plans.

A Rushmore teen organized a luncheon for more than 70 women, invited local businesses to promote their products and offered guests a chance to tour the historic Dayton House in downtown Worthington Saturday — all to earn the highest honor available to a Girl Scout, the Gold Award. Whitney Behrens logged more than the required 65 hours of independent work that goes into earning the Gold Award, taking steps that focus on creating, building, exploring, gathering information and serving her community.

Nicole Gardner, a senior at West Geauga High School, wanted to bring a little comfort to the children staying at The Green House, a shelter for families fleeing domestic abuse. Last year, she decided to create a children’s library at the newly built shelter. Nicole chose the task, as a project to earn a Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.
