Since June, three members of a neighborhood troop have received the highest honor possible from the Girl Scouts of America. Cait-lyn Biggs, Rebecca Kjeer and Marissa Harrer, members of Troop 1178, were recipients of the Gold Award. The three were the only Gold Award winners in the troop’s 11-year history, said troop leader Mar Harrer, the mother of Marissa.
Biggs and Kjeer, who received their Gold Awards in December, collaborated on the restoration of a pet cemetery in Pinellas County. Biggs and Kjeer, who received their Gold Awards in December, collaborated on the restoration of a pet cemetery in Pinellas County.

To say Kelsey Uecker is a good role model is an understatement. The Sibley East senior’s service to the community, to the school, and to the church are unmatched. Girl Scout since first grade, Uecker organized “Blankets of Hope” for her gold award project. During this two day event, Uecker and other community members tied blankets which were donated to the University of Minnesota Lions Eye Clinic and to local ambulance services. Uecker acquired material for the project by asking area churches and civic organizations for donations.

As the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases rise in the Omaha area, a metro teenager organized a health fair on Saturday to educate her peers about the risk. High school junior Kaitlin Zardetto-Smith, 16, said she decided to help change that after a church group project last year. Zardetto-Smith organized a health fair to fulfill a Girl Scout gold award requirement and to promote STD education.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 26 have spent the past month dedicating their afternoons to volunteering at the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children, helping the agency get ready for a family celebration. Girl Scouts Kathryn Vance, Elizabeth Hardig, Molly Murphy, Sarah Ann Waugh and Rebecca Soltysiak have spent several weeks preparing 770 activity packets, which include books, learning activities, puppets, a lottery game, a shape and match game and more. The Girl Scouts, all of whom are juniors at Statesville Senior High School, are using the time volunteering at the partnership toward the 65 hours required to receive their Gold award, the highest Girl Scout award.
