Cullman’s own Madison Pirkey has the distinction of receiving the highest honor in girl scouts and that’s much more than just cookies. Pirkey was awarded the Girl Scouts of America Gold Award during a recent ceremony. For the Gold Award, a girl must complete a community enrichment project that will be on-going and it must be approved by the board. Madison chose to assist AYSO install a flag pole and plant a memory garden at the soccer fields at Heritage Park. Madison was able to bring civic, private and government organizations together to make this dream a reality.

The Gold Award is the highest honor given by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Scouts must perform service projects, among other requirements, to earn the award. The following youths have earned the Gold Award:
Ailie Pankonien, 19, assisted Lost Paws Rescue of Texas by hosting an informative booth that cataloged each animal available at the shelter and also educated younger Girl Scouts on responsible pet ownership by conducting pet care badge workshops. She is a member of Troop 2397, a sophomore at the University of North Texas and the daughter of Bronwyn Brock and Dean Pankonien of Coppell.
Lindsey Wainwright, 18, collected baby blankets, booties, mittens, socks and art supplies for patients at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. She is a member of Troop 811, a freshman at the University of Arkansas and the daughter of Peggy and Gary Wainwright of Garland.
Delores “Dee” Wallander, 18, helped the children at Jonathan’s Place emergency shelter by working with volunteers to entertain the toddlers with crafts, games, snacks and lunch. She is a member of Troop 811, a freshman at the College of William & Mary and the daughter of Angie and Bill Wallander of Dallas.
