Emily Prosch, a junior at Boulder High School, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for her project “Youth Room Revived.” Emily solicited input and help from community youth and adults to renovate the youth room at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Gunbarrel. After 175 hours of planning and labor, the room has been transformed into a modern, comfortable place for community youth to meet for activities. The room features a theater entertainment system, pool table and small kitchen. Local businesses and community members donated money and furnishings.

Local Girl Scouts, D’Anna Stracuzzi and Tina Parriott will be honored with the highest award in Girl Scouting Women’s Club of Stuart, 729 S.E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart, 1-3 p.m..

To earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, High School Senior Kelly Tranfaglia, of Garden City, found inspiration for her Girl Scout Project when visiting with some of Mercy Haven’s residents. The teen was touched when she saw the lack of common comforts she often takes for granted. Kelly, along with Mercy Haven staff and volunteers, made personal stops at the agency’s residences last Thursday, October 9th, to distribute brand new comforters, sheets and decorative items to 52 individuals. These items were donated to Mercy Haven by Bed Bath & Beyond and collected by Tranfaglia.

Young achiever: Alex Reid
Reid earned her Girl Scout Gold Award — the highest award the organization bestows — this summer. For her Gold Award project, she put together a scrapbook that U.S. Steel uses in presentations before students and Scout troops. The book includes pictures and text about the company’s community projects. Reid said she worked a couple of hours nightly for about two months to sort through boxes of pictures and lay out the pages. The project taught her the importance of breaking a large project into small, achievable steps, while she discovered the fervor that some volunteers bring to community projects.

Senior Girl Scout Heather Coston, of Troop #5292, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – Girl Scouting’s highest achievement – for her community project, “Sensory Garden for Holiday House.” Heather created a sensory garden at the house so the children could improve and develop their senses. She brought in sand, lava rock and river rock to teach the difference between gritty, rough and smooth textures. She planted flowers to help develop sight and smell. She purchased water fountains for the sound of trickling water. She completed her project by providing a booklet about the new plants in the garden and a scrapbook documenting the garden’s transformation.
