Even more impressive, by earning their Girl Scout Gold Awards, Crystal Hardy of Dublin and Megan Green of Rentz became the first Laurens County scouts to achieve the award in six years.
For her Gold Award project, Hardy, 19, took on the task of completing at playground at WINGS (Women In Need of God’s Safety). While a foundation grant was in place to purchase new playground equipment, Hardy recruited, organized and delivered the volunteers to make the project a reality.
For her project, Green, 17, organized a free spay and neuter day to promote responsible pet ownership. The owner of several animals herself, Green wanted to help reduce the number of unwanted pets and strays in Laurens County by providing the surgeries to as many needy families as possible.

What was once a plain grass courtyard at Franklin Township Elementary School has been transformed into a children’s nature garden with more than 100 plants, trees and shrubs, thanks to the efforts of Cori Steimling. Steimling is a 16-year-old junior at Gettysburg Area High School and a Senior Girl Scout in Troop 1285 of Cashtown. She designed and built the garden to complete her gold award in Girl Scouts and her senior project at school, which is a graduation requirement.
