On Thanksgiving weekend, approximately 70 volunteers from Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Menlo-Atherton High School’s Girl Scout troop and the Ravenswood Education Foundation remodeled the district’s Teachers’ Training Center so that the portable could be used for a few more years. Melissa Hall, a Girl Scout and senior at Menlo-Atherton High School, coordinated the project. “I just wanted to help out the education system here in any way that I could,” Hall said. “I wanted to do something where you could see it working. It is a stepping stone for teachers to have better education in the teacher-training sessions. It’s for teachers to see that they’re appreciated.” Hall also worked on the project to complete her Girl Scout’s Gold Award, the highest award that Girl Scouts age 14-18 may earn. “I wanted to help people in an area that I know,” she said.

When it came time for College Park resident Kimberly Snider to pick a community service project to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, improving the College Park Animal Shelter was a clear choice. Snider enlisted fellow Girl Scouts and her family to help her complete small projects around the shelter as well as plan fundraisers. She also found cats permanent homes and donated cat food and cat litter.

Karen Doyen of Girl Scout Troop 01704 in the Girl Scouts of Swift Water Council received the Girl Scout Gold Award on Nov. 8 during a formal ceremony in Representatives Hall at the Statehouse. Doyen had noticed the need for an accessible, stimulating activity for nursing home residents who could no longer read due to poor vision. For her project, Doyen created a system of books on tape and CDs she called Traveling Tales. The result is a three-container set of materials that rotates through three nursing homes to provide a variety of entertainment and education for residents.

Kelly Parker, 16, went the extra distance when it came to the Holiday Hustle 5K that took place Sunday at Horseshoe Lake. She organized it, starting more than a year ago. Parker, a junior at Morristown Beard, is a member of Girl Scout Troop 796 and needed to think of a project to earn her Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor. “You had to do something big for it,” she said, adding she had to detail for the Girl Scouts what she was doing and why.

Elizabeth Musser has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. For her final project, Musser planted and tended to an 18th-century herb and flower garden, complete with authentic and native plants as well as educational markers. She also compiled a set of lesson plans divided by grade level and subject matter. The garden is at Wallburg Elementary School.

Along with her textbooks, Alex Kluthe lugged home bags of clothes, lotions and DVDs from school on many afternoons this fall. The Pine-Richland senior wasn’t shopping after school. She was collecting items donated by Pine-Richland Middle School pupils for the Mars Home for Youth. In the end, she collected 35 bags and boxes of donations and hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards for the Mars home, which serves at-risk youth age 11 to 18.

This past summer Amanda Lindgren earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by directing a Bible School program at her church. “It involved a lot of work to get everyone organized,” she said, “and everything went well, except the time I had to call one mother because her son bit his twin brother. Other than that it was fine.”

A former Montgomery County special education student has donated five homemade kits to the county for students with sensory integration problems. Kayla Price, who graduated from Blacksburg High School this spring, helped make the kits, valued at about $1,200. Among other things, they are filled with textured bean bags, weighted blankets covered with buttons and zippers and containers of sand. “It helps calm kids to be able to touch these things,” said Connie Ritchie, a hearing specialist in Montgomery County, who also worked with Price.
