As if being a track captain, honor society member, student council member, concert choir member and student representative to the School Committee isn’t enough to keep a high school senior busy, Katherine McManus has added political activist to the list. For her final project after 13 years with the Girl Scouts, Ms. McManus created a Web site — www.youthvotema.org — specifically aimed at answering voting questions for teenagers and encouraging them to register and vote. She had the support of her troop leader, and mother, Judith Tully, to help her complete the project and receive the Girl Scout Gold Award. Nine others in her troop are also working on projects for the award.

The Gold Award is the highest honor given by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Scouts must perform service projects, among other requirements, to earn the award. The following youths have earned the Gold Award:
Janet Hardin, 18, and her group partner supplied ABC Son Shine School with learning centers created to educate students about reading, writing, math, science and art. The pair also donated educational toys and computers to the school. She is a member of Troop 3873, a freshman at Texas Tech University and the daughter of Carol Hardin of Longview and Bill Hardin of Richardson.
Kathryn Lewis, 18, encouraged people from her community and area schools to donate more than 350 books to the USO Reading Room at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where U.S. servicemen and servicewomen are video-recorded while reading a book. The book and tape are then sent to the troop’s family to keep as a memento. She is a member of Troop 1541, a freshman at Belmont University and the daughter of Donna and Eric Lewis of Flower Mound.
Carolina Morgan, 19, empowered young women in her community by offering free self-defense seminars taught by tae kwon do instructors. She is a member of Troop 1275, a sophomore at Stephen F. Austin University and the daughter of Carolina and Edward Morgan of Dallas.
Rebecca York, 17, improved the morning library at Spring Valley Elementary School by adding more than 300 Spanish and English books, creating an organizational file system and adding book shelves. She is a member of Troop 2400, a senior at Berkner High School and the daughter of Steven York of Richardson.
