Tractor Almost Kills Dad – Boy Scout Sons Save Him

Posted by admin under: recognition .

Here is another example of great kids using their Scout training and keeping calm under pressure. Rachel Sheeley at the Palladium Item (cool name) relates the story.

Today, Troop 114 Boy Scouts Colt and Marshal are scheduled to receive the national Lifesaving Heroism Award from the Boy Scouts of America during the annual Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting in Indianapolis.

The brothers are credited with saving the life of their father, Dave Bane, after he received a serious gash to the head when he was hit by the crank of an antique tractor he was working on.

Dave Bane, who owns Tom Raper RVs, was working in his barn on a 1934 Farmall F-12 tractor that has been in his family for five generations. The boys were in the house, which is some distance from the barn.

Dave Bane can’t remember exactly, but he thinks the tractor probably backfired, sending its old-fashioned crank into his head, cutting him and knocking him unconscious.

“I remember knowing I was hurt, but I couldn’t see, I had blood in my eyes. … I was drowning in my own blood in my nose and mouth,” Dave Bane said. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to bleed to death if I don’t get up or get to the house.’”

He set out for the house, sometimes walking, sometimes crawling, with stops where he passed out. He finally got to where the boys could hear him call for help.

Colt asked Marshal for towels to staunch the bleeding, and Marshal elevated his father’s feet. They tried to keep their dad awake as he passed in and out of consciousness.

The boys worked patiently with their father while they waited for help to arrive. They could hear the sirens but realized that the emergency crews had missed their driveway. They kept talking to the operator.

“I was amazed that my dad still lived, because he was cut all the way down to the skull. … I never knew a tractor crank could be so powerful,” Colt said. “The day was terrifying.”

Dave Bane was treated at the new Reid Hospital and while he is still suffering some aftereffects of the concussion, he is recovering well.

Wow. These guys are some kind of heroes. There’s more cool stuff in Rachel’s story like how the presentation will be broadcast on the Internet and who the boys will meet and how the national office became aware of their lifesaving deed. So, read the whole, great story.

Even though this is spam it cracked me up. Yes, I guess a bobcat tractor would be the one to attack its owner. I’m glad the dad is okay so I can laugh at this accidental characterization.
