Jews or Jesus?
Posted by admin under: religion .
Both, actually. More, too, in fact. The Boy Scouts of America is a non-sectarian organization. In my own Scouting career I’ve mentored Catholics, Lutherans, Eastern Orthodox, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindu boys as well as those fine shades of Christians that are too difficult to see from the outside. When I used to serve as a Roundtable Commissioner (really just an assistant, but hey it still counts) for Cub Scouts my cohort was an up and coming leader who wanted to ensure that Jewish Scouts felt welcome in the local organization. He started a wildly successful pack at his temple and has gone on to become the Western Region Conference Chairman for the National Jewish Committee on Scouting and has reinvigorated many programs in our area.
I’ve gotten the impression that some people think of the BSA as a Christian organization and either approve or disapprove of that idea, but that debate is irrelevant because it is not true. Good character is not limited by creed and I take pride and pleasure in welcoming a beleagured faith in our organization.
