Philly Fun with Atheists

Gil Spencer at the DelCo Times has some amusement regarding the invocation of God at the Obama inauguration and the reapparance of a Boy Scouts suitor (suer? what’s the word from someone who sues?).
It is very important that when Barack Obama takes the oath of office next week, he doesn’t say, “So help me God!”
At least it is very important to a couple-dozen anti-religion activists, including our very own “freethinker” Margaret Downey.

Atheists, as a group, are very sensitive. Or at least they pretend to be.
Margaret has been outraged or saddened by the discrimination she’s felt as an atheist ever since the Boy Scouts of America supposedly banned her son from Scouting back in 1993.
Only the Scouts did no such thing.
I remember it all pretty well because I wrote about it back then.
It was Margaret who was rejected from Scouting, by the local BSA troop in Chester County. As she admitted herself, she “applied” to be an adult volunteer, but made a big deal out of her atheism, crossing out the word “GOD” in her application.
Scouting officials correctly perceived her to be an anti-God zealot who had no real interest in Scouting. She made it obvious her real goal was to push an agenda, and one that didn’t square with traditional scouting principles.
Of course, she sued and lost.
I recall a cartoon she had drawn up at the time, portraying a Boy Scout leader as a furiously deranged Nazi (swastikas and all) screaming at some poor little frightened child.

Her goal has always been publicity. And by joining the cult of losers who pretend the very mention of the word “God” is an affront to our Constitution and demeaning to them personally, she’s gotten it.
