Cubs Hit By Car – Most Are Okay
Posted by admin under: safety .
In Overton, Texas, Cub Scout Pack 912 was waiting in line to take part in the Overton-New London Christmas parade when an elderly driver crashed through a barricade and hit them. KSLA.com has video and interviews of a Cub and mom.
“I was asking this one lady for a piece of gum, and she said yeah, and I turned around and a truck started coming towards us real fast,” said Toby. “It was real scary, frightening.”
“I was sitting in my car waiting for the cub scouts to march back, and all the boys started coming back, and I thought to myself, why are all these boys coming this way? I thought maybe Toby is back or something, so I got out of my car and walked over to the Overton Auto Park and they said well, the cub scouts got hit by a car, and I went to shaking and I said well, I’ve got to go. I need to find my kid,” described Nancy Melton.
News-Journal.com has details on the injured
An executive with the East Texas Area Council Boy Scouts said nine Cub Scouts and two adults were injured. The Scouts, ranging in age from 6 to 11, were scheduled to be part of the parade, officials said.
As of Monday night, one Cub Scout was at a Dallas hospital with a broken leg, said Mike Ballew , Scout executive for the East Texas Area Council.
Two of the boys were being kept overnight at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, and six boys were expected to be discharged, Ballew said.
In addition, two volunteer Cub Scout leaders were injured.
“They have not been released but we think they’re going to be OK,” Ballew said. “We’re optimistic. Things appear to be better than we thought they might be.”
The adults sound like they are moms and den leaders. One of the hospitalized boys has already been released according to the Associated Press and KLTV.
One of two children hospitalized in Tyler overnight after a car barreled through a Christmas parade crowd in a small East Texas town was discharged today.
Mother Frances Hospital spokesman John Moore says the discharge of the 7-year-old boy leaves another 7-year-old in the hospital in serious condition.
When you hear a group of people has been run down by a truck you expect the worst. It sounds like most of the kids should be fine. Send your good wishes and thoughts for the young one who is still in the hospital.

I am a Program Manager for the Circle Ten Council, West View District and I was so shocked to hear of this! Now I worry about all my boys even more than usual during parades and outings! I will be praying for these boys and scout volunteers! I am glad to hear that most everyone is ok!
