Eagle Scout Does the Right Thing

Posted by admin under: safety .

Sounds like a cliche, doesn’t it? Of course an Eagle Scout does the right thing. however, this is the case of a man going hiking and getting lost. He could have easily become another statistic and becoming panicked resulting in needless delay. Instead, this man kept his cool and did not become another injured or deceased count over at Hiker Hell.

A man (Mark Albrecht) backpacking solo was out for a multi-day trip through the Cascades. The man, an Eagle Scout, packed for worst case scenario and brought a zero-degree bag, extra food and left a detailed itinerary with rangers.

The man was hiking down some switch backs when a dense fog rolled in. He missed a switchback and lost his bearings on the trail. Instead of wandering around aimlessly, the man decided to pitch his tent, ration his food and wait until the fog cleared or for rescuers to find him.

On Sunday, the weather finally cleared and the man figured out where he was. He found himself one mile from the trail. He hiked down to a river where he came across a hiker who knew they were looking for him (the missing hiker).

The good Samaritan gave some of his food to the man, then escorted him down to a command center that was managing the rescue effort.

B-Real’s website has a link to the original story if you want more details. How heartening it is to read about an Eagle Scout who seems to have remembered most of what he learned while he was an active Scout! :)
