H1N1 Swine Flu Hits Boy Scouts in Utah
Posted by admin under: safety .
I’ve been treating swine flu the way I would any other flu. Maybe that’s a mistake, but everything I’ve seen says that the treatment is pretty much the same as the regular flu. However, it’s serious enough that a camp in Utah has been closed due to one of their staff contracting the virus according to KSL tv.
Camp has been canceled for hundreds of Boy Scouts after a staff member at Camp Maple Dell was diagnosed with the swine flu.
Monday was schedule to be the first day of camp for about 40 Boy Scout troops and up to 450 Boy Scouts; but before they ever left for camp, they were told to stay home.
Staffers at Camp Maple Dell had just finished a week of training to get ready for the summer season, when Scout leaders were notified on Friday that a staffer who went home sick earlier in the week had tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
There were about 80 other staffers at the camp last week who were possibly exposed to the virus.
Leaders of the Utah National Parks Council, which operates Camp Maple Dell, had discussions with the Utah County Health Department and, on the recommendation from the health department, decided to close the camp for a week.
Utah’s Daily Herald is also reporting this information.
Gailey said officials were surprised by the case this late in the season, but the decision to close the camp was intended to prevent any further outbreaks. All of the staff were sent home and asked to self-quarantine by staying at home until Wednesday, avoiding contact with others. So far, Gailey said there have not been any other confirmed cases of swine flu among staff members.
“There have been a couple of other youth that started getting flu-like symptoms,” he said.
The decision of who to let back into camp will be made later this week, after the virus has had some time to incubate. Those who do not get sick will be able to return to the camp June 14, while those who were infected can return seven days after the onset of their symptoms, Gailey said.
