But Will He Be President of the BSA?
Posted by admin under: politics; scouters .
Scoutingnews.org asks a provocative question. Will Barack Obama accept the traditional role of Honorary President of the BSA as every President since Taft has? Click on over to Dan’s site to give your answer.
If President-Elect Obama follows tradition he will be part of the largest celebration the Boy Scouts of America has ever seen. He will help the organization celebrate its 100th Anniversary and address the crowd at the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree.
…
Do you think President-Elect Obama will be the next Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America?

If BSA does not invite him to serve as their honorary president, it will be a snub to the majority of the American people. I doubt that even they could be that stupid.

I agree. I think Dan was asking, though, if Obama will accept. It’s a given that the BSA will extend the invitation.

I think Obama will accept the invitation. He seems to have no qualms about associating with people he disagrees with. For instance, his invitation to Rev. Warren to do the invocation at his innauguration. He seems dedicated to the idea that just because we disagree on an issue, we don’t have to be enemies. In fact his approach seems to be to engage, and look for common ground. A Scout is a “friend to all”.

While I did not vote for Barack Obama, and on many issues and idealogies we are very far apart, he is our President. From my perspective as a life long scout and scouter I would hope that he will recognize the good that scouting does and the responsibiity that any good leader has toward promoting the genral welfare of those he leads. I think he is a decent man and will do the what he beleives is right. We don’t all have to agree but we do all need to work together to improve our nation and indeed the world. I beleive he is commited to that. I very much beleive John P is spot on. “A Scout is a friend to all”

The President *has* accepted and is serving as the National Honorary President. There was no doubt that he would accept the role, because Scouting’s ideals mesh with his administration’s goals toward public service for all.
The President was a CUB SCOUT in Indonesia…not a Boy Scout. The program there is similar to the USA’s Cub Scouting program without the advancement (and the multitude of insignia).
The REAL question is how long will the President stay at the National Scout Jamboree next summer — and the followup to that is that afterward, will he kick the BSA in the pants for the lack of minority representation participating in that Jamboree? Already, our local Councils have gotten the informal word (and soon, they may get it in electronic or paper form) that the number of Black and Hispanic youth participating in this Jamboree is LOWER than the past three Jamborees…and that a refocused effort needs to be made to bring more Black and Brown youth and adults to participate. We’ll see how that works out.

I am a Cub Scout volunteer and a big Obama supporter. My son loves Cub Scouts and I want to hear about any internal protests forming among Cub Scout volunteers of the discriminatory practices of the BSA. Post them here!

If Obama is offered the position as president of the BSA, I will mail my old BSA uniform back to my local BSA office. Nothing would be wrong than asking Obama to represent the BSA in any form (ceremonial or otherwise).
