The Passing of Ralph Cobey
Posted by admin under: scouters .
I found this obituary fascinating due to the nature of Ralph Cobey’s Eagle rank presentation.
A pillar of the Galion community who served five American presidents, beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt, died at his home at the age of 99.
…
Mr. Cobey received numerous awards and honors throughout his lifetime and one of his most cherished was being named to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Hall of Fame for his work on behalf of Malabar Farm. He also received Boy Scouting highest adult honors, a fitting tribute to a man who received his own Eagle Scout Award in 1926 from Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouting movement.
Wow. I don’t know how many American Boy Scouts can lay claim to that kind of honor. Unfortunately, one less this week, but it sounds like he had a great, full life.
Hmmm. Sounds like there will be a biography of his life coming out by Missy Harris.
More from his home town’s web page.
Cobey received his Eagle Scout badge in 1926 from the founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Baden-Powell, and later in life he was awarded the Baden-Powell World Fellowship Award by King Gustav XVI of Sweden for his ongoing support of the Boy Scout movement.
Heh. I guess when you meet with the President you talk about what’s on his mind.
He knew every U.S. president from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Lyndon B. Johnson and served them in advisory capacities, his family said.
Cobey once spent 45 minutes in the Oval Office with Dwight Eisenhower, not discussing industrial development to benefit American Indians as Cobey expected. Instead, they discussed the president’s zoning headaches over his Gettysburg, Pa., farm.
