Scouting on Cloud 9
Posted by admin under: Software .
One of the ideas over at the BSA Innovation Engine (the website for paid Scouting employees to talk about ideas for the organization) discusses outdated software and moving to cloud computing.
ScoutNET needs some updates. The lag time on Scoutnet is getting worse. With more and more entries entered into the system daily it will continue to get slower due to too much strain on an outdated software program. Is there a way to start to look at, “Cloud Computing” software programs or even programs that use batch processing to increase stability of this or even another data entry program?
In a weird conflux of serendipity the job I landed after being out of work for most of 2009 was at Intuit which offers a cloud computing system called QuickBase and my dear new Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles have jumped on board that bandwagon.
The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles – serving Los Angeles County and parts of Kern and San Bernardino counties – are using QuickBase as their online database to track and manage cookie booth sales locations and times for their annual cookie sales.
…
Since automating their systems with QuickBase, the Council has reduced the paperwork associated with the sales for 3.5M boxes of cookies annually by 95%.
…
When Greater Los Angeles County residents decide they want to buy Girl Scout cookies this March, they can now simply text or email their zip code to gs@girlscoutsla.org. The system will search the online database and return the exact location, date and time of two nearby cookie sales booths. If you want more locations, simply hit reply and QuickBase will send you two additional locations pulled from the more than 600 sales booth locations and 18,000 sales dates and times that the volunteers had previously entered into the system.
Maybe the Boy Scouts should call the Girl Scouts to learn a little something about cloud computing to reduce delays, hmmmm?
