Not Quite Accurate
Posted by admin under: Training; safety .
There’s a blog post I’ve seen getting some play and it doesn’t seem to be completely true. http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/9507/33302556
It’s bad enough that Barack Obama wants to teach your kids about the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching, so that they can protect themselves against pedophiles. But, following up on a comment at the Washington Monthly, I see that the Cub Scouts do too.
…
“This 8-page comic is the third in a series of youth protection comics for Cub Scout aged kids featuring Akela, Baloo, and T.C. It illustrates scenarios that advise kids about the dangers of strangers and inappropriate behavior by adults toward children, and what to do in scary situations.”
They’re talking about the guides to teaching our Scouts about how to stay safe from potential pedophiles. I don’t think the program has changed since I taught it. That focused on not being alone and saying “No” when an adult made you feel uncomfortable. I haven’t read this comic book and I’d be really surprised if it discussed the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching.
Now I have to go and buy the thing to actually know for sure.

I’ve seen this in the Scout shop. I don’t understand how it got published, but these comics are pretty much the only Scouting related product that I refuse to buy. The good thing is that most kids and families won’t even know it’s out there.
