Jerry over at the thescoutmasterminute.com alerted us to the existence of a parent’s resource site called http://www.scoutparents.org/. The stated purpose is to
develop and implement methods which encourage and empower Scouting participants to help maximize the number of Dedicated Scouting youth and parents and mentors as Dedicated Scouting volunteers who participate with their Scouts.
I don’t know about Jerry’s troop, but I’ve never had a problem with energized parents finding something to do. My main problem with parents who want to participate is getting them involved. First, they want to look around and see what is going on. They want you to somehow involve them in the meetings. However, there isn’t really much for them to do in the troop meetings because those are being run by the SPL and adult leaders are really just supervising and conducting other business like boards of review or turning in receipts for outing expenses or just talking to the other parents.
I’ve heard repeatedly that the parents want to know how this all works and what our traditions are. I’ve done a poor job of getting that into print, but I hold parents accountable, too, because all it takes is a conversation with veteran parents to learn about these things.
I’m a little hazy on how scoutparents will help, but I’m willing to browse around. At the very least is goes over the basic principles of Scouting so that parents know they are on the same page as the other families who have been in Scouting a while.
