Take the Family to Philmont
Posted by admin under: Training .
What? How’s that? You can’t take non-Scouts and young kids to Philmont. True. You can’t take them on a trek, as far as I know, but you are allowed to take them with you when you take a training course at Philmont. Philmont has a number of programs designed to keep tabs on the tykes while you’re in your classes.
What do they charge for their courses and extras? I’m glad you asked.
Fees
2009
Conference participants $450
Spouses and children over 2 $320
Children ages 6-20 $255
Children ages 3-5 $160
Children 2 and under $60
Mountain Trek $340
NAYLE participant $340
Your fee covers all meals and lodging (beginning with supper on Sunday and ending with breakfast Saturday), training materials, and family programs. Optional programs such as bus tours, handicraft supplies, and Cimarron museum visits may be available at a nominal additional cost.
Hey! That’s a lot less than some of the trek prices I’ve seen, but obviously doesn’t include your transportion to get to the Philmont Training Center. You get to set up in a luxury tent, have breakfast with the family, go off to training to better yourself and your unit while your family gets to enjoy the wonder of Philmont, then regroup after training and see some of the great sights altogether. What a deal!
So, how do you get to sign up? You have to be invited to train. I was told by my trainer that the process for this is that you call your council and ask them if you can get an invitation. They put in a request for a class, any class, and then you get the invitation from Philmont with a full curriculum to choose from so you can do the original training you wanted or something else that seems like an even better fit.
Following this link you can view or save the course schedule. Man, there are a ton of courses for every level from Cubs to Professionals.
