Youth Leadership Training at Philmont
Posted by admin under: Training .
Scouting magazine has an article about NAYLE, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, being held in Philmont on June 1st. I’m not sure about the timing of this article since it’s pretty much too late to get in this year, especially with the $340 price tag, but I fully endorse the program. I just think it’s probably something that you want to start budgeting for next year.
NAYLE, the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, is gearing up for another summer of high-level training at Philmont. Don’t delay. Final payments are due June 1.
The one-week course for 14- to 17-year-old Scouts teaches leadership, teamwork, and selfless service. It’s meant as the final step for boys who already have completed Troop Leader Training and National Youth Leader Training. Participants should currently hold a leadership position within their troop.
The $340 cost covers meals and lodging, training materials, a NAYLE cap, and two NAYLE T-shirts. Scouts are expected to bring their full BSA Field Uniform (also known as the “Class A”) and a Class 3 Medical Form. There are eight weeks to choose from. The first lasts from June 14-20, and the final week goes from Aug. 2-8.
Your guys will return changed men, ready to lead the troop after learning effective leadership techniques. For a better idea on what to expect at NAYLE, read Scouting magazine’s March-April 2007 story, “Scouts ‘NAYLE’ the Qualities of Leadership.”
My son did the National Youth Leadership Training course (formerly Junior Leadership Training) and it was one of his more enjoyable Boy Scout experiences. Just like OA conclave or the National Jamboree, when you get a group of Boy Scouts together who are enthusiastic and committed to the program the enjoyment factor is exponential. If you put that program in a fantastic setting like Philmont I can only imagine that it can be a turning point in a young man’s life as he realizes the potential within himself to assume the responsibility of leadership for his community and possibly our nation. I hope your son is the kind of Boy Scout who wants to have that experience and explore the far reaches of his potential.
