Alex Kelsey Looks Drawn, Hopefully
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
For the past several months, Alex Kelsey has been combing the back pages of Boys’ Life looking for the comic representation of the time he saved his family after a car wreck.
Alex’s actions will be featured in the magazine, and he’s been awarded the Boy Scout’s Medal of Merit.
His father, Stephen Kelsey, was driving Alex and his younger sister home from Michigan City last winter when a semi-truck on U.S. 20 pushed their Jeep Liberty off the snowy road and flipped it on its side into a water-filled ditched.
The rear window blew out and the car began filling up with water. Anatasia, 7, was screaming in the backseat and Stephen Kelsey was out with a concussion.
That’s when then 11-year-old Alex utilized skills he learned from the Boy Scouts and took control of the situation.
Alex took his father’s knife and cut away the seat belt he’d been entangled in. He scrambled out of the car, but not before kicking his dad in the head, which he still apologizes for.
…
For his heroic efforts and leadership display Alex was awarded the Boy Scout’s Medal of Merit on Thursday night. The award goes to Scouts who perform an act of meritorious service beyond what is normally expected. He was nominated by the family’s State Farm agent, Marv Thomae, just days after the accident.
“It’s not something that you put in a garage sale,” Alex said of the medal. He also got a corresponding patch, which he was fired up to add to his uniform.
But Alex is still most excited for the comic. Boys’ Life regularly runs strips chronicling the feats of award winners, and Alex’s story could be chosen for an upcoming issue.
“I’ve always hoped to be in it,” he said.
I like how Alex does this great thing and keeps his cool while calming his sister and what he’s most excited about is being featured as a cartoon in Boys’ Life. Come to think of it, at that age, so would I.
