Back from Camp. Miss Me?
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
I took my Boy Scouts to camp last week in the Sierras of central California. Mrs. admin did a great job keeping the blog open while I was gone and adding some interesting information. She refused to do it when I got back, though. Let her know she still should give you guys information, too. I thought she did a better job than me, but maybe that’s just my sense of wanting dinner expressing itself.
Summer camp was fun. We went to Camp Whitsett operated by the Western Los Angeles County Council. Some guys hiked to the top of Sentinel Peak in the wee hours of the morning. Some took horse rides, bicycle rides, no rafting this time, tons of merit badge classes, tomahawk throwing, star gazing, night time orienteering, fishing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, and even basket weaving. We got to make peach cobbler and ice cream in our campsite as well as roasting s’mores. We didn’t win the camp-wide aquatic activities, but I was able to demonstrate the belly flop to the 500+ campers who came down to the waterfront. Even the leaders were allowed to do some of the activities during free time. We introduced one hard-core mom to shotgun shooting and she showed me how she could kick my butt in archery. We even got to see Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in which Indy is a Boy Scout. That was at the trading post which is always a popular destination for boys trying to find candy at camp. A bear or something went through the trash at the waterfront, but we were safe since we had hung our trash and snacks from a tree.
While I enjoyed my time, I was happy to get back home where I could let my blisters heal and take a comfortable shower instead of a tiny, cramped one. We even got the boys to take showers a few times at camp. The hike to a field where the boys slept on the ground while staring up at the stars was fun, too, even if we decided not to sleep in the giant teepees available.
If it all sounds too good to be true you can check it out yourself at www.whitsett.org to see photographic proof.
