BSA: Parent Meeting with Few Parents
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
I know I didn’t give them enough notice or make face-to-face communication with them and that’s why half of the parents in the troop didn’t show up to the parent meeting on Tuesday. I did send out a blast e-mail and used an automated system to send phone reminders to everyone, but I can’t say that I talked to people and got a commitment from them to be there. I’ve found the only consistent way to get people to meetings and events is to stand toe to toe and talk for a while. Nothing beats face time. Nothing.
Still, I did have most of my new parents at the meeting and we talked about the troop policies and had them ask questions so they could start to understand how the troop works. I passed out a nice, thick packet of information including patrol rosters, fundraising information, and parent resource surveys.
We then talked about our big Christmas tree fundraiser and how we’re down about 11 families this year over last year. Now we have to figure out if we’re going to have a shorter selling season or only work the weekends.
The new parents really are great, though. Two moms have stepped into committee roles, including a new membership chair. I really lucked out with her. She’s been the head of her school’s PTA before and I’m starting to see our next committee chairperson on the horizon. That’s the problem with quality volunteers. They’re doing such a good job on what they’re working on now and you know they’ll be good in something else that will need them soon. I’ll have to wait and see which position will need her excellent services more in the future: chairperson or membership. Then I have to see if I can convince her to agree that our need is what she’s willing to fulfill.
Actually there’s a number of people who might work out for chair. It makes you feel a little smaller when you realize you can replace yourself pretty easily. Either that or the troop is running well enough that switching out the chair isn’t a problem.
I really need to get to work on recruitment. *sigh* A committee chair’s work is never done. Even if I try to duck it most of the time. Oh, yeah. I almost forgot that Thursday is Roundtable with the new recharter training. I shouldn’t complain, though. On Monday I had an entire night without having to go to any Scout event at all. I started getting withdrawals by 9pm and had to go to bed early. No worries about that for the next few days.
