Defibrilators Get BSA Green
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
The Puget Sound Business Journal says that the BSA is going to be outfitting its camps and councils with defribrilators. That makes sense since the CPR training they keep giving us has the code blue devices as a component these days.
Cardiac Science Corp. said it’s entered into a deal with the Boy Scouts of America to provide automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for Boy Scout camping areas and council offices.
Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
There are 4.7 million Boy Scouts in the U.S. and more than 300 Scouting councils. The organization is based in Irving, Texas.
“This alliance helps us achieve our goal of having 100 percent of our local councils’ camps and offices equipped with AEDs. The availability of AEDs and active promotion of CPR and AED education can help every Scout, Scouter, and family member be prepared to assist a victim of sudden cardiac arrest,” said Richard Bourlon, health and safety team leader for the Boy Scouts of America, in a statement.
Rumors that these devices were purchased to offset the heart attacks leaders were having when seeing their receipt total after buying a whole new centennial uniform were unfounded.

Our summer camp has had an AED for several years, signed off by a physician in our troop. Our camp is more remote than most, with a mile boat rip across the lake for access. At this point, not having an AED at camp is almost negligent. I would expect many camps to be 30 minutes from emergency response, and that is way too long for cardiac arrest.
