GSUSA: Drive-In Drama

Posted by admin under: Outings; Uncategorized .

Our Girl Scout Troop outing was Drive-In Night. The girls were to make movie trailers, not the whole movie-just a trailer, and we’d show them on an outdoor projection and then watch a regular movie.

There were four teams working on projects, but after all was said and done only one of the projects was brought to the event. I knew teaching my daughter how to use that video editing software would work out in the end.

She and her team put together a trailer using claymation stop motion to tease the story of a group of aliens crash landing on the earth and setting out on a journey to recover the last part of their space ship on Candy Mountain with a purple unicorn. If it all sounds too stereotypically girlish all I can say is they completely did this on their own. And I thought it was cute.

So, the drama started when teams because teams began to bail. I think the project was more work than they anticipated and when they couldn’t finish it off they had to admit they wouldn’t have a trailer ready for us. That’s okay, my wife made a music video featuring as many troop members as possible dancing. So, there was something else to see.

Then, my Tiger son desperately wanted to make a movie, too. So, we did a Veggie Tales knock-off that was supposed to be much more tongue-in-cheek and ended up being a fairly straightforward David versus Goliath story.

When we went to the viewing location we had electric cord drama, battery drama, speaker drama, and finally the wind picked up and knocked over our projection screen so we decided to pack in like sardines in the living room and watch the movie there. Much more comfortable and I’m completely happy it worked out that way although I had already been nice and toasty in my woolen wear.

The girls in charge of the event did a great job setting it up. We had popcorn and candy and soda to go along with our movie-watching experience. It was past 9pm when we finally cleaned up and headed home, but I really enjoyed myself. I liked watching the Cindy White film with the girls and I really enjoyed making a tiny movie with my son.

Let’s see. Thursday was leader meeting, Friday was committee meeting, Saturday was an outing, and tomorrow will be the weekly troop meeting. Thank goodness this is a heavy week and not the norm. Still, it makes you want to get your head examined when you realize how much time you’re speding on Scouts. Check that. It makes you want to get other parents’ heads examined to figure out why they aren’t jumping at the chance to be more involved in their daughters’ lives. It doesn’t even feel like parenting. It feels like having a good time.
