How to Save a Life
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
It’s not just a song, it’s training and action. Jean Tyrell waxes lyrical in the Herald News Online.
Dustin Hadley, 12, is a Minooka seventh-grader, and not one to brag about his accomplishments.
During a Boy Scout meeting, he modestly mentioned he’d used his first aid training to do the Heimlich maneuver on his younger brother.
His mother, Ann, confirmed that Dustin’s quick actions saved the life of younger brother, Dalton, then 8, who was choking on a piece of hard candy.
…
“Dustin is a hero,” said Mike Stromberg, a Joliet firefighter/paramedic, who taught Dustin first aid skills as part of Boy Scout merit badge activitiy through Scout Troop 464 in Minooka , including how to help a choking victim.
Stromberg said even adults who learn these skills sometimes panic in a real emergency.
“He might not realize it now, but he saved a life. Many times I train people, but never see if the training has been used or not I can’t be more proud of him, to recognize and use the skills, to have the assurance to act.”
What a great guy Dustin is. I’m constantly amazed at the growing list of young heroes Scouting is producing all the time.
