Lead Like a Deer
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
I was approached by Robin Peterson, a camping chair from the Santa Clara County Council, who wanted to share an old leadership program that he’s promoting and that I had never heard of. Based on his description and the information on the program’s web site, White Stag Leadership Development was a precursor to the old Junior Leadership Training course in Boy Scouts. The program is localized in central California in its current form which teaches both boys and girls leadership using the patrol method.
The program is incredibly well documented on its site and I called the council to verify the individual and the program which is actually run through the Monterey Bay Area Council. If you’d like to see an example of another youth leadership training program go to www.whitestag.org.
The program is open to boys and girls who have completed the 5th grade through 17 years old. We believe that the challenge of leadership development is best taught in a setting where the participant can apply, in a hands-on setting, the skills of outdoor living
Camp Dates
Session 1: Sunday, July 12 to Saturday, July 18, 2009
Session 2: Sunday, August 2 to Saturday August 8, 2009
Two Camp Locations
Two camps will be held in 2009. Session 1 will be in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Camp Lindbald near Highway 9. Session 2 will be held at Rancho Alegre, located on highway 154 just north of Santa Barbara. Rancho Alegre borders thousands of acres of wilderness. Both settings offer great opportunities for hiking and backpacking and an action-filled week of leadership development.
Serving Youth since 1958
The White Stag program was founded in 1958 and since then has involved and challenged tens of thousands of youth in their personal growth. The program’s leadership curriculum and learning methodology have stood the test of time. See how we plan and implement a week-long outdoor camping experience.
The program continues to pioneer techniques and methods for effectively teaching leadership competencies to youth. Using hands-on methods, we directly involve youth in their learning.
Leadership Development by Design
We believe the skills of leadership can be acquired through practice. Leadership is not inborn nor intuitive. We put participants through practiced exercises where leadership is required, encouraging and supporting youth in continual improvement. We use the outdoors because it’s fun fun, physically challenging, and rewarding. We use a small-team approach where everyone gets the attention they need and the opportunity to engage and improve. We apply a systemic approach to leadership development, encouraging repeated exposure and practice over months and years. We believe in the infinity principle: that education never stops, and for that reason we continually evaluate, seeking ways to improve both as individuals and as an organization.
White Stag is a federally tax exempt 501(c)3 organization.
