Popcorn Settlement

Celinda Emison is the contact for a story in the Abilene Reporter-News about an Explorer Post leader who was convicted for crimes against a youth member. Now the family wants to name Boy Scouts of America in a lawsuit, but will make the lawsuit go away if the BSA pays them one million dollars. What do you think? Do you think they’ll accept half a million tins of popcorn, instead? I know I don’t like the idea of people who want to help the Scouts and donate money get that money sent off to an extorting attorney. That’s just me. I’d rather the money went to the kids. I’m depressed about the small number of bad people who try to use Scouting as a way to access kids, but I certainly don’t want all the rest of the kids to have to pay for those bad people’s crimes.
In the letter, Austin attorney Scott Ozmun, who is representing the 15-year-old female victim and her family, recommends the Boy Scouts of America settle out of court for $1 million in damages, to avoid further litigation. The letter was dated Sept. 26 and obtained through an open records request by the Reporter-News.
So far, the city has attempted to settle the out of court through mediation, but Brownwood City Attorney Pat Chesser said today he expects a lawsuit to be filed within the next week to all of the defendants named by Ozmun. The city has retained legal counsel from attorney Jon Mark Hogg of the Texas Municipal League.
