Red Letter Day
Posted by admin under: Uncategorized .
Red as in stop. There’s a special time in every blogger’s life when somehow he manages to attract the attention of some psychotic spambot pinging him relentlessly. I now have the dubious honor of having more rejected spam comments than real-life ones. I tried to avoid imposing registration because Mrs. Admin said it’s better to have just open entries, but I think I’m going to have to figure out how to do that in order to avoid having to manually approve every comment. I won’t block comments that disagree with me so why am I bothering to do these manually? Just to help out, I guess. I saved one young man from saying something inappropriate by verifying that he wanted to phrase his comment in a particular way. That’s was just one time, though, so it seems like people are able to play nice even when they don’t agree. Yeah, I just need to figure out that cool captcha code to block the bots.
On the other hand, while a lot of the spam comes with a .ru extension which would seem to indicate it was coming from Russia, I looked at my google analytics world map and I’ve had no visitors from there. I posted about these cool stats a couple months ago and I’m happy to say I’ve finally gotten a hit from every state in the union. Delaware was a big holdout, but they finally came through. A few new countries came in, too. Hugh Chavez is checking me out in Venezuela (or maybe somebody else from that country). The G.I.’s in Iraq heard my wail and checked in. I haven’t gotten a hit from Afghanistan, but I’ve got it boxed in by Iran and Pakistan. I’m not sure why someone in Uganda checked this site out, but I’m glad they did. Now I know Moldova is right next to Romania, both of which decided to give us a look-see. Somebody must have been on a plane or something because you can go right across to Hungary into Austria, Germany, and Denmark. In fact, you can go from the Atlantic all the way across to the Sea of Japan with the visitors who’ve come by here. South Korea, but no North Korea. I’m not holding my breath on that one. Oh, Sierra Leone is on the western side of Africa. Cool.
So, I’m having fun. Thanks for stopping in! Feel free to leave the spam back in Russia.
