Tornado Scouts Receive Medals

How you act in an emergency is the test of your intelligence and bravery. The Boy Scouts who found themselves in the middle of a tornado and had to regroup in its aftermath had different opportunities to display those qualities. Their reactions were honored with Boy Scout medals this past week as described by The Daily Nonpareil’s Chad Nation.
Friends, family members and scouts from across the area saluted the heroic efforts of the Boy Scouts and scout leaders who risked their own safety to tend to dozens of wounded victims when a tornado ripped through the Little Sioux Scout Ranch during Pahuk Pride National Youth Leadership Training on June 11.
Scouts and scout leaders were presented with the highest honors the Boys Scout of America award, including the Medal of Merit, Heroism Award, Honor Medal and – the highest award – the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, at the Mid-America Center.
Council Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan read a proclamation recognizing Saturday as Boy Scout Youth Leadership Day in memory of Ben Petrzilka, Aaron Eilerts, Josh Fennen and Sam Thomsen, the four boys who died when the tornado struck the camp.
